Many independent or DIY artists work a “day job” or “9-5” to make ends meet in-between playing live or recording new material. I can only speak for myself when it comes to daily routines and artist process, but I think every artist can relate to how exhausting it can become if you don’t take a step back to rekindle. My average day is spent waking up at 5:30am to shower and dress for and head to my “day job”. After a long day working in customer service, I drive home thinking about what I might be able to accomplish that evening. I used to get right to it when I walked in the door, but now at 53 years old, I take an hour nap to recover from the day. My average evening consists of anywhere between two to four hours of recording, mixing, marketing, graphic design, and updating my blog / website. Some days it feels like you’re on top of the world having accomplished many of the things of the evening do to list, but there are days where burnout takes over and the work is not the quality it needs to be so you wrap it up and head to bed leaving much unfinished work. You wonder if you’re doing things right, or if you choices have led you down an impossible road. It isn’t long before I pull of the burnout and start the next day with fresh eyes. More about the process later in this article… Let’s get started with the top 10 things you can do to help give a little boost to any DIY / local band that you are into.
- Stream their music… Artists can see each time that one of their songs is streamed including which song was streamed and in what country, state and city. This is not only motivating for the artist to see but it also tells the streaming service algorithm that the song has “value”. Your stream could actually cause the algorithm to share / recommend the song to other listeners with similar music tastes that you have according to your listening history. Best of all, doing this won’t cost the listener anything and will boost the artist in many ways. Below is one of my songs… Of course I would love if you would take a listen but if don’t want to, please look up an independent band that you would like to hear and give them a boost.
To be continued…
