Publishers, music supervisors and record labels are out there looking for new music, but can you be found? Sound Cloud, Spotify, Apple music and hundreds of other places that you can get your music on but that doesn’t mean it will be found. There is so much music being uploaded every day, so you have to make your track stand out. It’s important to also have a website for your music and also put it up on Sound Cloud, Reverb Nation and Link Tree. I think it was the Netflix documentary on Lewis Capaldi that mentions he was discovered on Sound Cloud. Anyone can access Sound Cloud and you never know who might be looking for new music. I went a long time without a Sound Cloud page until I read into the value of being on the service and I have been uploading my new songs there now as I finish them. Sites like Reverb Nation and Sound Cloud have their own search function within the site so make use of that and get your music up as soon as possible so you don’t miss the people searching for music like yours.
On the CDBaby DIY Musician Podcast, Kevin Bruner once said something like if your music is performing really well they will take notice and reach out to you. This isn’t a quote from Kevin and I don’t the episode it was on, but you get the idea. People in the industry will reach out to you if you are creating a buzz for your music on the Internet. It’s a very exciting time to be an independent musician with all the opportunities and promotion avenues available today.
I’ve decided to try a this approach by changing the way that I market my music both online and off. I think it would be fun to see how I can improve my SEO (search engine optimization) not only on Google but all around the Internet. There are many ways I think I can accomplish this and it isn’t all about adding just keywords to my website. I am experimenting with mp3 metadata and how it affects search results when I give away a free download and finding different ways to get the attention of streaming music algorithms and word-of-mouth for offline promotion.
This reverse-marketing approach is going to be challenging, especially because I don’t have a physical product that consumers need, I only have a song that I can offer them and if I can get their attention for a very short amount of time and get them to listen, they just may like what they here and look into my music further.
Follow for updates on the music marketing results from these efforts and ideas. I will post more about it as information is gathered. Thanks for reading!
