Footsteps on the Rooftop
Tommy lay in bed, eyes wide open, staring at the twinkling Christmas lights outside his window. The clock on his nightstand read 11:47 PM—just a little over ten minutes until Christmas morning. He was supposed to be asleep, but how could anyone sleep when Santa Claus was on his way?
As he tossed and turned, a strange sound made him sit up straight.
Thump! Thump!
His heart raced. What was that?
Then, another sound—a faint jingle, like bells ringing in the wind.
Tommy’s eyes grew big. Could it be?
He tiptoed out of bed, careful not to wake his little sister, Lucy, and crept toward the window. Pressing his nose against the cold glass, he peered up at the roof.
Thump! Jingle! Thump!
“I knew it!” Tommy whispered, his face lighting up. “It’s a reindeer!”
He wanted to rush downstairs to see if Santa was in the living room, but he hesitated. What if Santa saw him? Everyone knew that Santa only left presents if children were asleep.
Tommy bit his lip. Maybe he should go back to bed. Maybe he should—
“Ho, ho, ho!”
Tommy gasped. That was definitely Santa’s voice! He clapped his hands over his mouth to keep from giggling out loud. He imagined Santa checking his list one last time before dropping off presents under the tree.
A few more soft thumps sounded above, then a whoosh—like the wind rushing past.
Tommy’s heart swelled with excitement. He didn’t need to see Santa. He already knew the truth.
With a happy sigh, he crawled back into bed, pulling the covers up to his chin. As his eyelids grew heavy, he smiled.
It was Christmas Eve, and Santa had come.
And this time, he had proof.
