Coffee & a Playlist 2025 Christmas Advent Calendar

Introduction

For billions around the world, coffee is more than a beverage — it’s a daily ritual, a comfort, a cultural staple. But this beloved drink has a story as rich and complex as its flavor. From its ancient discovery in the mountains of Ethiopia to its modern role as the fuel behind bustling cities and quiet mornings alike, coffee’s journey is a fascinating tale of tradition, trade, and transformation.

The Origins: Legends from Ethiopia

The earliest known origin of coffee traces back to the ancient highlands of Ethiopia, around the 9th century. According to legend, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats becoming unusually energetic after eating bright red berries from a certain tree. Curious, Kaldi tried them himself and experienced a newfound alertness. Monks at a nearby monastery took notice and began brewing the berries into a drink that helped them stay awake during long prayer sessions.

While this story remains folklore, it underscores how coffee’s earliest use was not for leisure but utility — to stimulate the mind and prolong alertness.
